Planning a Trip to Switzerland? Here’s Your Ultimate Pre-Departure Guide!
Are you planning a trip to Switzerland and wondering what you need to do before you leave to make your journey smoother? In this guide, we will cover all the essentials so you arrive in Switzerland fully prepared and in the know.
1. Download the SBB Mobile App
Public transportation in Switzerland is exceptional. It can take you almost everywhere, is punctual, and runs frequently. If you plan on traveling by train, bus, boat, or gondola, you’ll want to download the SBB Mobile app before arriving. The app provides all departure times, connections, and prices. You can even link your credit card to buy tickets directly in the app, up to the time of departure, saving you time and avoiding crowded lines. For added convenience, enable “EasyRide” to swipe on when you get on public transport and swipe off when you get off. The app will calculate the final price of your journey automatically.
2. Get a SIM Card or eSIM
Having a data plan in Switzerland is essential for looking up important information on the go and managing your travel plans. You can buy a tourist SIM card in Switzerland, and I recommend using Sunrise, which costs around 20 CHF for a week of data, or you can choose from more comprehensive plans that include the rest of Europe.
Another option is to purchase an eSIM, which you can purchase ahead of time and activate from your phone, provided it’s eSIM compatible. I have used Airalo several times globally. They offer various data packages that cover Switzerland or all of Europe.
3. Bring a Travel Adapter
When coming to Switzerland, you’ll need an international adapter or a Swiss-specific adapter. Swiss plugs are similar but not identical to the rest of the EU, so keep that in mind. Additionally, Switzerland operates on the same voltage (230V) and frequency (50Hz) as the rest of Europe, but this is different from North America and some parts of Asia. If your devices are not compatible with this voltage, you will need a voltage converter to prevent damage to your electronics. I recommend getting an all-in-one adapter and voltage converter similar to this one.
4. Download the MeteoSwiss App
For the most accurate weather information, download the MeteoSwiss app. This app provides up-to-date weather information specific to Switzerland and is particularly useful when rain is in the forecast, allowing you to see the rain clouds coming in and plan your outdoor activities accordingly.
5. Currency Exchange and Payment Methods
Switzerland uses the Swiss Franc (CHF). While many places accept credit and debit cards, it’s a good idea to have a bit of cash on hand, especially for smaller establishments and rural areas. Currency exchange can be done at airports, banks, and exchange offices, but using ATMs for local currency is often the most convenient and cost-effective option.
6. Swiss Travel Pass
If you plan to travel extensively by public transport in Switzerland, consider getting a Swiss Travel Pass. It offers unlimited travel on the Swiss Travel System network, which includes trains, buses, boats, and some mountain excursions. It also provides free or discounted entry to many museums and attractions.
If you also plan to travel to other European countries using public transport, you may want to consider a Eurail Pass. Considered the most popular rail pass in Europe, the Eurail offers unlimited train travel across 33 countries in Europe, and is an easy, convenient way to experience Europe.
7. Travel Insurance
You never know what can happen during your travels, and it always a good idea to err on the side of caution. For accidents, injuries, lost luggage, etc., I recommend SafetyWing Travel Insurance. One of the reasons I like them is that you can insure yourself for the exact number of days of your trip, and it can be purchased immediately. You can read more about their policies, coverage, and pricing here.
